Some people are hard to categorise. Kyuss King is one of them.

He's a professional surfer from Byron Bay competing on the WSL Challenger Series, chasing a spot on the Championship Tour against the best surfers in the world. He's also the bassist in Headsend — a raw, grungy rock trio with his brother Rasmus and drummer Bon — who in their first year of playing live gigs managed to open for Wunderhorse, Tool, and AC/DC.

Now they've just dropped their debut EP Angel Glands and announced a USA tour.

Most people pick a lane. Kyuss doesn't seem to have got the memo.

From Byron Bay to stadiums

Kyuss and Rasmus grew up in Byron Bay doing what Byron Bay kids do — surfing everything, competing constantly, pushing each other in the water from a young age. Music was always part of the picture too, playing around at home, but it stayed informal until a few years ago when the brothers decided to actually start a band.

They brought in Bon on drums — their nan's next-door neighbour and a mate from school — and Headsend was born. The sound is heavy, grunge-soaked, and immediate. Within their first year of live shows they'd earned support slots with some of the biggest rock acts to tour Australia, and in late 2025 they opened for AC/DC at Suncorp Stadium.

Not bad for a band that only had two songs when they started.

Balancing two worlds

What makes Kyuss unusual isn't just the music career running alongside the surfing — it's how little he seems to separate the two. The same restless, go-hard energy that drives him in the water is what you see on stage. Both are physical, instinctive, and all-in.

He was featured alongside Rasmus in TRACKS Magazine's December 2025 issue, a deep dive into the King brothers' shared journey across surf and music. And beyond the band, he's also picked up acting credits along the way.

On the wrist through all of it: the Raglan Tide in gold or gunmetal when he's in the water, and the Lansdowne in silver when the night calls for something sharper.

What's next

Headsend's debut EP Angel Glands is out now. The USA tour is locked in. Kyuss's Challenger Series campaign continues. There is no quiet period on the horizon.

We're stoked to have him representing Maxum through all of it — and we'll be watching both the leaderboards and the setlists closely.
